about

This recording documents my interest in musical connections between Carlo Gesualdo, J.S. Bach, Olivier Messiaen, Alexander Scriabin, Elliott Carter and my own language for improvisation.

It began life under the tutelage of Donna Coleman and developed by the way of a commission from the Museum of Old and New Art's 2012 Synesthesia festival.

“Liminal” refers to a position on both sides of a threshold, perhaps indistinguishably so. Increasingly I find my interest in music runs counter to categories or styles, and often transcends any philosophical disparities between the music I’m studying and my own. I’m encouraged by the fact that the more I focus on what I love in music, the more I’m able to develop and augment my language for improvisation.

Comes with a 2-page PDF booklet.
